Authors notes: Okay, this is my first shot at a fluff, and the first
time I have posted an entire fanfic to a list. I didn't bother to have it edited
because then I would have lost my nerve, so I take credit for all the spelling
and grammatical errors.
Feedback: PLEASE
Disclaimer: Okay, lets think about this rationally, if I owned
them, would I write fanfic? Point made, but in case you are deluded enough to think
I owned them, let me set you strait, Mulder and Scully belong to Chris Carter
and 1013.

Monday morning was one in which
Fox Mulder finally
shocked his partner out of
words. Mulder came into the
office with such ferocity,
that Dana Scully was
left speechless. He came in and
slammed the door so
hard, that file folders
that sat across the room came
tumbling down. That,
however, was not the part
the shocked Scully the most,
what shocked her the most
was when he opened his
mouth and told her to fill out
her resignation.
Scully sat in silence for a
moment, waiting patiently
for him to explain, as
he always did when he suggested
something off the
wall, but he turned away
from her and began searching for
something in the
clutter he called a desk.
When she realized that he wasn't
going to elaborate
she stood from her
sitting position, crossing her
arms. "What the hell do
you mean fill out my
resignation."
"Just do it Scully."
He didn't even bother to turn
around and continued to
look for whatever he was looking
for.
"Oh, no Mulder. Not this
time," Scully had a habit of
doing as he asked and
questioning it later, but this
was not some autopsy,
this was her career "I'm
not moving until you explain
yourself."
Mulder then turned to face her,
"Do you trust me
Scully?"
She stared at him, "Of
course I trust you, but..."
He didn't bother to listen,
"Then fill out your
resignation. Resign from this
confounded place, and go live
your life."
"Live my life, Mulder you
aren't making any sense."
"No Scully, for the first
time it makes complete
sense. My search is over,
Samantha is dead. You're alive,
and I'd like to keep
it that way. You've
fulfilled whatever obligation
you had to me in helping
me find my sister, so
why not get out while you
can?"
If this would have been a
cartoon, Scully's jaw surely
would have hit the
ground. Hadn't they had this
discussion before, didn't
he understand that she
wanted to be a part of the
X-files. Didn't he know
that this was her quest
too? So what, Samantha had
supposedly been found,
there were so many other
questions that she wanted
answered.
"Mulder, I'm not
quitting." She said defiantly,
looking at him with a
questioning look. How could he
suggest such a thing?
"And do you honestly
think that I have stayed with
you this long out of
obligation?"
"Last night, I though about
is Scully, why else would
you stay in something
that you don't believe in. You
are bound by science.
The X-files have nothing
to do with science, I know you
tell me that you like
proving the scientific
side of these paranormal
incidents, but you can't
honestly tell me they are
fun. How many times have we
watched each other in a
hospital bed, taking
comfort in the steady beating of
a heart monitor. How
many times have I had
to call your mother and tell her
that you're in the
hospital? Scully, I want
you to get as far away from me
as you possibly can. I
want you to go
somewhere and live happily ever
after.'
Scully then realized the reason
Mulder had been in
such a bad mood, he had
been making himself feel guilty
again, which always
put him in a bad mood.
Scully knew that he was that he
was trying to protect
her, but it angered her
that he though he knew what she
wanted. "Mulder, I
gave up on happily ever
after a long time ago. After
everything I've been
through, I don't want
happily ever after. Mulder, you
act as if I've been
forced into this, I
haven't, I've chosen this route
as much as you have.
I'll leave happily ever
after to the princesses, I have
happily ever after
here, in this cluttered,
mildewy, basement office. It's
all the castle I want."
Mulder opened his mouth, then
closed it and gave a
small, tentative, smile,
"Do you mean that
Scully?"
She though about her childhood,
how she was the only
one who didn't want the
knight on the white horse to
carry her away. She
laughed, and at Mulder's
look of confusion she
elaborated, "When I was little,
Mulder, I always wanted
the groom on the brown horse to
carry me away. I never
wanted the prince, and
I don't now."
Mulder decided to venture out
onto uncharted
territory, "What do you
want?"
Scully paused, her next words
could changer her
future, her whole life. "I
want.. I want the stable boy,
Mulder."
Mulder smiled a little, hoping
he hadn't misunderstood
what she had meant,
and then tentatively said,
"I don't have any horses,
Scully, but I do watch
out for quite a few files."
Scully took a step closer to
him, "Well, it'll be hard
to ride them into the
sunset, but..." She smiled
one of those rare smiles
that Mulder had only seen
a few times, " I guess
they'll have to do."
Mulder closed the distance
between them, kissing her
lightly on the lips. It
was a short kiss, nothing big,
but it held a lot of
feeling, and that was
what counted. They were going to
move slow, because
they wanted to relish
every part of their
relationship. They had happily
ever after for everything
else.
